About the Work

In 1982, Nike ended the run on the Air Force 1. The kids of Baltimore sent three sneaker entrepreneurs to convince Nike to extend the run. The high demand for fresh style in B’more would become high demand around the world. How should Nike thank the city? Artist Ed Piskor illustrated the B’more/AF1 story. His graphic panels were painted onto the brick walls of Cinderella Shoes, one of the last standing institutions that helped save the AF1. Plus, Baltimore’s iconic bus benches were re-created and repainted to remind the city of its AF1 history. Plus plus: custom Baltimore AF1s and T-shirts were made. Triple plus: bronze plaques were installed to commemorate each of the three shoe stores that played a role—Downtown Locker Room, Charley Rudo Sports, and Cinderella Shoes. Finally, we threw the city a dope block party, and Nike collaborated with a local arts program.
