About the Work
The BBC’s Planet Earth 2 series revealed the human world is encroaching deep into the natural world. So we let Nature return the favour. For two nights, a leafy central city park became a very bad day in the Serengeti: prowling lions. Stampeding wildebeest. Circling vultures. Cackling hyenas. And a little disembowelment. It was ‘theatre of the mind’ on a grand scale – reconfiguring sound and footage from the BBC show to create a bladder-loosening, 360 sensory ambush. A concealed multi-speaker installation ‘located’ individual animal noises and enabled them to ‘travel’ – creating the impression that you really were caught in the midst of a lion hunt and wildebeest stampede moving around, through and over the park. Stampeding animal footage from the show was synced with the sound. Projected through ambient smoke onto low-visibility mesh screens, it cast strong shadows onto the ground, heightening the ‘suspension of disbelief.’
