About the Work

This campaign highlights The New York Times’s dedication to honest, reliable journalism by demonstrating the extreme lengths to which our reporters go to get our readers the hard truth. This particular film features never-before-seen takes selected from more than 20,000 pictures taken by New York Times photographer Bryan Denton during his coverage of the Iraqi counterterrorism forces in Bartella, Iraq, on October 26, 2016. During this assignment, Mr. Denton was hit by an ISIS-deployed suicide car bomb. As he describes his experience on the ground, we see several of the outtakes he captured in the battlefield, leading up to the explosion and the final shot featured in the Times’ article titled “ISIS Sent Four Car Bombs. The Last One Hit Me.”
