About the Work

In the US, suicide is a growing crisis. The Crisis Text Line’s ability to help is limited by their number of volunteers. A cancer diagnosis often brings a sense of loss and a dramatic shift in mentality. While facing their mortality, patients seek purpose-driven activities (helping others), but their ability to participate is severely compromised. We created TXT 2 HLP, a mobile platform for NY–Presbyterian and its affiliate oncology hospitals to connect patients whose lives are threatened by cancer, with people who are threatening to end their own life. This unlikely connection provides Crisis Text Line with uniquely qualified volunteers, whose experience renders them highly effective counselors to those in crisis. Patients can volunteer from wherever they are, including an infusion chair.
