About the Work
Most Americans are shocked to learn that maternal mortality has become a crisis right here in the U.S. Black women are 3-4 times more likely to die during childbirth than white women. To build awareness of this issue, we created a heartbreaking reverse narrative short film that highlights how American mothers are less safe giving birth now than decades ago. Armed with true stories from real women and maternal health advocates, our film makes the emotional point that despite good parenting, good education, and a good job, surviving giving birth in the U.S. is far from a given. With the help of Serena Williams, legislation by Senators Kamala Harris and Kristen Gillibrand, and our film “Reverse”, racial bias within the healthcare industry is now a fixture in national news coverage. The film was created for Merck for Mothers and helped launch an additional $10M community initiative to combat maternal mortality.
