About the Work
The Royal Marines are an elite fighting force. The brief was to attract new recruits and give meaning to their long-running line “It’s a state of mind”. So we created a campaign that gets to the heart of what it means to be a Royal Marines Commando. The idea was simple: to be a Royal Marine you must learn to override your natural human instincts. Even if that means not breaking cover in the face of unimaginable danger, such as a poisonous spider crawling over your face. The giant Bird Spider is entirely CGI, even down to the minute anatomical details that make the spider so unnerving. Details like tiny water droplets on its fine micro hairs and light reflections off its bald back skin. The spider also makes the occasional mis-step, adding to its sense of realness and authenticity.
