In 1969, a riot at New York City’s Stonewall Inn sparked the modern LGBTQ civil rights movement and became the symbol for the fight for LGBTQ equality around the world. For the 50th Anniversary of the riots, The LGBT Center of New York campaigned to ensure that Stonewall was granted status as a National Monument. The struggle for LGBT rights is very much alive - so a monument needed to reflect not only the history but create a space for new stories to be told. And the struggle for LGBT rights is happening all around the world - so a monument needed to reach beyond New York so that anyone, anywhere could experience it. In 2019 we launched Stonewall Forever, a living monument, on the web and in AR, allowing anyone to step into the Stonewall National Monument and experience the past, present and future of Pride. Visitors are immersed in a monument that unites hundreds of colorful interactive pieces, each containing a different oral history, video, photo or artifact from the movement. Anyone can add their own piece to the ever growing monument, in the form of an image and story that builds on the growing legacy of Stonewall.
