In a move worthy of Megan Rapinoe, Brazilian soccer legend Marta Vieira da Silva commanded attention during a June 2019 Women’s World Cup match by pointing dramatically to her soccer boot right after she scored the goal that broke the record for lifetime World Cup goals scored by any player in the world, male or female. Marta, who has played - and scored - in five World Cups, had no corporate sponsorship for those boots. Instead, they sported a pink- and- blue equal symbol representing gender equality. Marta, who earlier turned down a sponsorship deal for 24 times less money than a male player would earn, is ambassador for a new movement for gender equality in sports called GO EQUAL. She is also a United Nations goodwill ambassador for women and girls in sports. Her well- timed primetime stunt last summer sparked headlines about “Marta dedicates landmark goal to gender equality” around the world, including The New York Times, the BBC and saturation coverage in Marta’s soccer- mad home country Brazil. The campaign garnered 426 million impressions and 3.8 million engagements.
