About the Work
Trapa Chocolates was dramatically losing market share, so we decided to renew the whole production chain to make it more sustainable, to remove palm oil, and to raise awareness via PR. We travelled to Borneo to take a photograph in a rainforest that was planned to be deforested in a matter of weeks. We published it in a press page, as a photographic document marking its geolocation, and warning that we would denounce its deforestation by coming back to take a new photo in the same exact spot, as soon as it were destroyed. What looked like an innocent fashion photograph was in fact a public PR challenge to Ferrero, Nestlé,… and the whole palm oil lobby. 7 weeks later, they sued us. Instead of stopping the campaign, we reacted by making the sue public, sparking a first social debate. Then, the Indonesian government denied our visa to come back to take the second photograph, and we reacted by hiring a satellite service, which revealed that they only left intact the area where we took the first photo. Immediately, we published this satellite image, generating a huge debate in social media and digital press about the ingredient.
