About the Work
The Truthmark initiative is an online community of pro photographers adding to a global database of images. The goal of the databse and the community mission is to protect their work and to stop misuse of images by attaching their true story with a digital fingerprint. Making sure the true story will follow their image.
The initiative also gives journalists and the general public a tool to verify and analyse images before using them to support or illustrate a narrative – simply dropping an image into the search function on the site.
The initiative was activated by three world-renowned photographers, who had their images misused, encouraging other photographers to join the fight. Furthermore, the initiative gives journalists and the general public a tool to verify and analyse images before using them to support or illustrate a narrative.
Because today photographers are losing credibility because their images are being misused to fuel fake news stories. Fake news is spreading faster than real news, and social media giants won’t regulate their platforms’ misinformation. This is a threat to democracy – and to photography. As a leading camera brand, Canon took a stand and champion truthtelling in photography.
The story quickly spread through international media and is endorsed and recommended by the Press Photographers Association.
