About the Work
UN has declared an infodemic, where misinformation is spreading faster than COVID-19 – and affirming fake news as a threat to democracy. It spreads 6 times faster than real news, and social media giants won’t regulate their platforms’ misinformation. Professional photographers are losing credibility because their images are being misused to fuel fake stories.
That’s why we created Truthmark – a global database inviting pro photographers to protect their work and stop misuse of images by attaching their true story with a digital fingerprint. Making sure the true story will follow their image. The initiative was activated by three world-renowned photographers, who had their images misused, encouraging other photographers to join the fight.
The initiative also gives journalists and the general public a tool to verify and analyse images before using them to support or illustrate a narrative – simply dropping an image into the search function on the site.
The story quickly spread through international media and is endorsed and recommended by the Press Photographers Association.
