About the Work

Huawei’s brand promise is to push the limits of what is humanly possible. Developed with 11 international charities, including the European Union of the Deaf, StorySign delivers on that promise. There are 32 million deaf children in the world, and many of them struggle to read. This is because deaf children don’t learn to read like hearing children. They can’t learn phonetically, so they struggle to match words with sounds. The treasured moment of a parent reading a bedtime story to their child can often end in tears and ripped books. So we worked with Huawei to develop StorySign - a revolutionary free app that uses the power of AI to help deaf children learn to read. StorySign takes words from classic children’s books and translates them into 12 sign languages, delivered by ‘Star’, the most advanced signing avatar ever. Parents and deaf children can now read and sign, together.
