About the Work
We want to drive a Formula E car out of a plane”, they said.
“Or at least make people believe we did”.
“I want this to look real,” said director Sam Walker.
“What would happen to the car and the driver if this ACTUALLY happened?”
This wasn’t about CGI, it was about physics.
Every camera, lens, movement and angle had to be correct. If a close-up was needed it had to be shot on the type of camera that would be on a skydiver’s helmet.
A realistic fall required background plates being shot, not CGI. They were filmed on a 360 camera from a free-falling skydiver.
We did the maths. We calculated that if the car fell from 12,000 feet over 77 seconds it would reach the kind of speed plummeting through the air as it would travelling round a racing circuit.
After everything was worked out, everything was put together.
There’s a time for amazing CGI and there’s a time for figuring out the physics and keeping it real.
