About the Work
Superstar was one of those editing opportunities that doesn’t come along every day. The cultural development of that iconic product combined with the director providing a multitude of mixed media perspectives offered the editor rare challenge. Chapters, graphics, narration, illustration, music, archival footage, and original photography provided the editor with strong ingredients to find the right way through this compelling history. The director's use of 16mm, VHS, DV cam et all, brought an authenticity to the tale and housed the rare beat of historical footage seamlessly. From basketball in the park in the 70’s, through the birth of B Boy culture, an appearance from Run DMC, and on to the development of more recent cultural phenomenons, the editor had everything they needed to present a unified journey through Superstar’s rich history.
The soundtrack provided the usual challenges. We wanted to touch on the rich diet of musical influences while still presenting a cohesive perspective. While we were navigating that tricky musical journey, the director started humming Moroder’s “Tears” - it quickly became clear where the project's backbone and our edit’s destination lay.
