About the Work

Amnesty International needs to collect 500,000 signatures to close Guantanamo Bay, where detainees as young as 12 are held without charges and tortured. The idea is, tear down an online Guantanmo Bay, and Amnesty can tear down the real one. The site features a stark photograph of the prison. When you sign the online petition, you get a pixel from the photograph. Your name appears where the pixel was. When all 500,000 pixels are gone, the photograph will have evolved into a mural of concerned people. And Amnesty International will have the signatures they need to ask Capitol Hill to tear down this icon of AmericaĆs tragic abandonment of human rights. Without any advertising support, the site has collected 100,000 signatures. It has been so successful that in 2008, it will be expanded internationally.
