About the Work

For the first time in American history, about 60 million people voted by mail. We assigned three photographers to document the monumental process of printing, delivering, and counting the ballots. Christopher Payne photographed the workers and printing presses at Runbeck Election Services in Phoenix as they churned out nearly two million ballots every 24 hours. Philip Montgomery went to Florida to document some of the 600,000 postal workers nationally who were shepherding, sorting, and delivering the ballots. Dana Litovsky and Montgomery were in Arizona, Florida, Pennsylvania and Michigan documenting the painstaking effort of tallying the ballots by hand.
