About the Work
On 1 July 1972 a crowd of protestors marched from London’s Trafalgar Square to Hyde Park chanting “Gay is fun! Gay is proud! Gay is beautiful!”. Fifty years on, we were asked to make a short film based on the release of eight special stamps by Royal Mail to mark the 50th anniversary of the UK’s first Pride rally. This was then shown across Royal Mail’s social channels and on the Royal Mail website from July 2022.
The idea, A March Through Time, pays tribute to each decade of Pride, from its origins in protest to its celebratory present. Featuring illustrations by queer British artist Sofie Birkin, the film brings the LGBTQ+ community’s journey vividly to life. Sofie’s free-flowing, colourful character illustrations tell the story of a community fighting for and celebrating its right to exist and be heard. Our film weaves their stories into a dynamic tapestry using hand-drawn, frame-by-frame animation. The treatment reflects the technology and fashions of each era, and the sound design rises to a crescendo as the film transports us through the decades.
Our most considered audience was the LGBTQ+ community. We engaged Pride organisations around the UK to ensure that the symbolism in the design from flags to tattoos, clothing to handkerchiefs, was respectful to all identities featured. Our ultimate aim was to reach out to the nation, so we were thrilled when the launch became a celebrated national news story.
