ASTERRA Customer Portal

ASTERRA uses satellite imagery, patented algorithms, and artificial intelligence to locate leaks, pipe deficiency, and moisture accumulation under the surface of the Earth, without breaking ground. They are humanity’s eyes, preserving valuable resources and protecting infrastructure.

ASTERRA is a data company, but the way that customers interacted with the data they provide was hard to use. The functionality and design of their previous portal made utilizing data and insights a huge challenge for customers.

VSSL designed a new customer portal that enhanced UI/UX for customers and internal stakeholders, positioning the portal as more than just a series of reports. It is a place where customers could interact with their data in meaningful ways, see clear ROI of the product, receive targeted messaging relevant to their industry, and experience the new ASTERRA branding that VSSL completed in 2021.

The team at VSSL started with interviewing ASTERRA team members and their customers. Through journey mapping, extensive wireframing and prototyping, and ample communication, our team was able to build a brand new customer portal for ASTERRA. Major improvements included a static sidebar menu for easy access to all areas of the portal; a new home page with projects grouped by product type, date, and location; a detailed, organized dashboard to easily view ROI, energy savings, and major data points; and a brand new, self-serve account section to easily view account information, permissions, and billing. Most importantly, the portal was built so that it can easily scale as ASTERRA adds new service lines. ASTERRA traditionally positioned itself as a satellite company but with their rebrand in 2021, the customer portal is a critical piece in shifting their brand into a data company.
