About the Work

Gerald Daugherty has a saying about his home town of Austin,Texas - “it’s a blueberry in a strawberry patch.” The Republican County Commissioner faced long odds of winning re-election, and his only path to victory involved appealing to Clinton voters to split their ticket and support a local Republican. Presenting Daugherty as a non-partisan pragmatist, rather than an ideologue, was key, and it was his habit of geeking out on the minutia of county government that inspired this non-traditional television ad. The self-deprecating spot highlighted the complexities of local government, while conveying Daugherty’s competence and commitment to handling them. The gamble paid off, and while Trump lost this district to Clinton by 17.98%, Daugherty won by 3.56%. In the process, it collected over nine million views online, was featured on every broadcast and cable news station, and became the first local political television commercial to ever make the YouTube Leaderboard.
