About the Work
Sandy Hook Promise is an organization started by the parents of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. They believe that every act of gun violence is preventable when you know the signs. The film "Evan" encourages people to learn those signs. “Evan” was created as a love story to lure the viewer into the foreground story while another violent story unfolded in the background. We needed the shooter to be visible, but not obvious, so we had to carefully balance the foreground and background stories. Through careful direction and framing, we were able to find that balance that left users saying to themselves “How did I miss that?” when we revealed the shooter to them. Through this approach, viewers were able to experience how easy it is to miss signs, instead of us just telling them.
