Sometimes, depression seems invisible. But people who reach this extreme attitude often leave signs that usually go unnoticed. Academic studies prove that people suffering with depression use some words and phrases more often. That's the depression grammar. But Amazon Web Services and SAP found a way to help: technology. We created an algorithm that tracks public posts on Twitter looking for the depression grammar's terms. According to frequency, recurrence and strength of the term, the tool can rank in which stage of depression each profile may be. Once a serious threat is identified, the user receives a direct message suggesting to call CVV, the Brazilian Lifeline available 24/7 for help people with depression. The project broke a taboo and made society discuss about depression and be alerted about its signs on social media, on Fantastico – the most watched TV show in Brazilian open TV - and even six universities where the project inspired symposiums. But, most importantly, many people identified by the algorithm answered our approach thanking for our help – and that’s a way of proving the efficiency of the tool.
