The Creativity: Sans Stereotypes panel discussion was hosted in August 2021 At MIFA

By Yi Chin Hsieh on Oct 11, 2021

The Creativity: Sans Stereotypes panel discussion was hosted in August 2021, along with the solo exhibition “Sans Stereotypes” by artist Marco Caridad. The panel discussion explores social labels, especially the differences of labeling and stereotyping, panelists’ experiences on facing similar issues of their practices as an artist, and personal identity. Panelists who participated in the discussion include artist Marco Caridad, artists of the “Sans Stereotypes”; Dimitry Chamy, a designer and transdisciplinary artist focusing on queer and multicultural perspectives; Paola Sierra, researcher and museum professionals whose research focus is on queer and feminist perspectives and histories; Patricia Van Dalen, a visual artist and educator that explores mixed media and applied art in her practice; and last but not least, artist and architect Rafa Muci whose works shift in between realms of design and art. The panel was led by the curator of “Sans Stereotypes,” Yi Chin Hsieh. Hsieh started with the question, “What stereotypes are common in your field of work? If you have encountered them or been subject to them, how have you navigated them?”. Participants were also very engaged with questions and discussions. Labeling and stereotyping are often common topics that we overlook when appreciating art since it is deeply embedded and hard to notice by ourselves. The panel wished to open up a door and platform for artists, art enthusiasts, and everyone to feel comfortable and safe to discuss the issue.
