“Nerf Herder (I don’t wanna be no)” music video / Ziddio
Submitted By Dawn Kolpin
Description
Intergalactic hip hop from the edges of the outer rim. Produced for the launch of Ziddo.com, a YouTube condender.
Objective
The “Nerf Herder” music video was created as part of the launch of Comcast’s user-generated content site, Ziddio. The first competition that Ziddio asked its users to take part in was to create a video application to become a Jedi.
As a briefing to the users, AKQA came up with the concept of two hapless nerf herders (think rednecks) from the backwater planet of Agamar. These poor guys tour the galaxy with their song about escaping their pre-ordained fate of herding nerfs like their fathers before them, thus hoping to get spotted by an actual Jedi.
The core target group for the music video was Star Wars fans. Thus the song contains numerous references to known Star Wars lore, terminology and expressions from the Star Wars universe.
Results and viral impact: The song and the video have been extremely well received by the Star Wars community and have been featured on theforce.net, the main hub for fanboys and girls. It has also been given its own entry in Wookiepedia, the Star Wars online encyclopedia.
