Bionic lobster / Leatherman Tool Group

Submitted By Steve O'Connell

Description

The submissions shows our hero, Bionic Lobster, on a mission -- to free his fellow lobsters from the clutches of a seafood restaurant. The purpose is simple to show that when you're equipped with a Leatherman, you've always got the right tool for the job. Even if the job is rescuing doomed lobsters.

Objective

Our goal with Leatherman is always to leave the audience feeling as though when they have a Leatherman, they’re ready for anything. And can do just about anything. If a Leatherman can do this for a lobster, imagine what it could do for a human.

Technical Challenge

We didn't want a CGI lobster. Both because the budget didn't allow for it, but also because the concept didn't really lend itself to computer wizardry. We wanted something real and organic to connect more with the audience. So that lead us to models and puppets. But the major trick with puppets, is that they're best when used on stage or in limited areas. But our hero needed to swiftly move all over the place. Which meant a lot of blocking to be figured out by Peter (the director) and our puppet guys (Puppet Heap). But they worked really well together and created a fantastic piece.
