Creative Showcase
Fence / Amnesty International
Submitted By Kirsten Rutherford
Description
A street art collaboration with the anonymous German street art collective Mentalgassi, to create art installations for Amnesty International. The installations are called ‘Making the invisible visible’. They highlight the case of Troy Davis, a man who has been on death row for 19 years in the USA, despite serious doubts about his conviction. The posters are displayed on fence railings. Front on, you see nothing but bars. Troy’s face only becomes visible from an angle. A plaque on the fence directs passers-by to a site where they can sign a petition to stop Troy’s execution- www.amnesty.org.uk/fence
Objective
Amnesty wanted a way to highlight their ongoing campaign against the death penalty through a non-traditional medium.
Troy Davis’ case required urgent action due to his imminent execution date.
We collaborated with anonymous German street art collective Mentalgassi to create a series of lenticular posters. We included a URL on the sites and made a film about the project.
Within 3 days, 40,000 people learnt about Troy’s case and Amnesty’s work.
Technical Challenge
Making contact with an anonymous German street art collective can be rather challenging and required super-sleuth internet skills.
