About the Work
"Upstream" tells the story of Jessica Long, a 13 x gold medalists Toyota athlete, who is born with fibular hemimelia. We start with her mother’s phone call with an adoption agent and follow her journey from Jessica being in an orphanage, to being adopted into a loving family who support her journey into becoming a world-class swimmer.
We made lighting to be the visual element that creates a strong focal point for each scene and helps time and space merge into a linear experience that motivates Jessica’s journey. Each “memory island” is lit with the purpose of re-creating the emotion from her journey, from sad to happy to empowering. The camera captures each memory as if it’s a still painting to further heighten the dream-like essence.
