Shining a light on the amazing class of Young Guns 17

What happens when you take a jury of 60+ respected creatives, more than 500 entries from all over the globe, and mix them all together for two months of serious consideration, debate and decision-making? Eventually you get the winners of Young Guns 17! This year, The One Club for Creativity is honoring a creatively diverse class of 28 winners, including animators, designers, photographers, illustrators, film directors and editors, all of whom came out of this process as true champions of their craft.

Ahead of the Young Guns 17 Ceremony + Party taking place on November 20, we are featuring the various superstars who will be taking the stage that evening.

First of all, congratulations! Now how did you first discover Young Guns?

I think first heard about Young Guns from seeing the award listed on the websites of various designers that I follow.

And this was your first time entering Young Guns, correct?

Actually, this was the first time I had entered any design competition! I had received an email about this year's call for entries, and, well, I just felt that the time was right.

Which of the projects that you entered is your personal favorite and why?

It would probably the "Coup De Vent" flipbook for the publishing house Editions Cacahuète. It was really great to talk with them about how to translate my animated work into a physical object. Most flipbooks try to stack a lot of information through the pages, but this flipbook is really subtle with the animation.

What was it like to discover that you won YG17?

I was skateboarding with some friends, enjoying the last days of summer when I received the email notifying me that I was part of the Young Guns 17 class. I was so stoked, so we went to a bar for some beers to celebrate.

How would you describe your creative style?

Poetic, abstract and narrative, soft and bold.

What is your favorite tool when it comes to making what you do, something you’d feel naked without?

Definitely my laptop with Adobe Creative Suite. Add in an inkjet printer, a photo scanner, my airbrush, some pastels, and inks and I am set!

What do you do when you hit a creative wall, when you are stuck for ideas and solutions?

The Internet is definitely a big tool for me to find ideas and inspiration. Sometimes I need the get off my screen and do something else, like reading some comic books, going outside skating, or playing ping-pong with my girlfriend.

Who are some of the biggest influences on your work and career?

Hergé, Hitchcock, Jorge Ben Jor, Uderzo, Paul Cox and all my talented friends around me.

Now that you’re in the Young Guns family, are there any past winners that you look up to and admire?

Grilli Type (YG13), Braulio Amado (YG13), Nicolas Menard (YG12), Tim Lahan (YG10), Kate Moross (YG10) and Andy Rementer (YG10).

Name a creative dream that you have yet to fulfill.

I would love to be able to travel with my work, as well as have my own studio.
