About the Work
"Upstream" tells the story of Jessica Long, a 13 x gold medalists Toyota athlete, who is born with fibular hemimelia. We start with her mother’s phone call with an adoption agent and follow her journey from Jessica being in an orphanage, to being adopted into a loving family who support her journey into becoming a world-class swimmer.
The unique challenge in telling Jessica’s experience is that, it is as much about the inspirational story of Jessica as an athlete, as it is about how a mother’s determination can change one’s life journey. We want to blend the two storylines into one powerful, united narrative. Our approach was to use her mother’s emotional phone call with the adoption agent as the VO, narrating through the journey of Jessica’s memories from which she draws her power and inspiration.
