About the Work
"Upstream" tells the story of Jessica Long, a 13 x gold medalists Toyota athlete, who is born with fibular hemimelia. We start with her mother’s phone call with an adoption agent and follow her journey from Jessica being in an orphanage, to being adopted into a loving family who support her journey into becoming a world-class swimmer.
Jessica’s story is told through “memory islands” from which she draws strength. Editorially, we want each memory in its own spotlight as an individual story; while also having all the memories crescendo into a powerful, united narrative. We use Jessica’s swimming and her mother’s phone call as the connecting tissue to blend the vignettes into a continuous emotional journey. Past, present, and future manifest into one linear story.
