About the Work
When a person suffers a brain injury or trauma, it often results in aphasia—or impairment of speech. Constant Therapy is a powerful app that patients use on their mobile device to treat their aphasia using intuitive images and language-based exercises. To demonstrate the simplicity of our app and provide a useful tool to clinicians and patients, we created “Fighting for Words — the First Posters to Help Treat Aphasia.”
The 20" x 30" posters were sent to clinicians nationwide to be displayed on office and facility walls. Using bright, dynamic illustration, they depict a single word—“sheep” or “tree”—on the tip of a giant tongue, fighting to get out of a cavernous mouth. Surrounding that word are a battalion of sound-alike “sh” words such as “shirt,” “shower,” and “shrimp;” or “tr” words such as “tray,” “trunk,” and “troll,” all competing to be said aloud—just like when aphasia patients complain they have a word on the tip of their tongue, but other words are fighting with it.
The illustration style is a bright, colorful, painted look that was carefully chosen to dramatize the frustration and anxiety felt by patients trying to say the right word. To achieve that feeling, we transformed every word into a highly expressive character, starting with the sheep and tree at the very tip of the tongue. The various characters and artistic details reflect a sense of tension and struggle, creating a truly immersive “word battlefield” that draws people into the plight of patients with brain injuries.
Clinicians use these posters with patients as a unique, memorable, and engaging one-on-one tool to help improve brain and speech function. Each poster comes with an accompanying worksheet that outlines cognitive exercises specifically related to the illustrations, as well as tracks patient progress.
