The One Club For Creativity's Juneteenth Statement

on Jun 17, 2020

On September 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring an end to slavery in the United States. It wasn't until June 19, 1865, however — more than two and a half years after the ink dried on that hallowed proclamation — that the declaration became reality, with the reading of General Order No. 3 freeing the slaves of Texas after the American Civil War. We now celebrate that day as Juneteenth, in recognition of newfound freedom.

We mention both the Emancipation Proclamation and Juneteenth to illustrate a hard truth: simply announcing something doesn't make it so, not without action. In recent weeks, many individuals, companies and organizations — The One Club for Creativity included — have declared solidarity with black people in their fight for justice and equality. We continue to show this solidarity by closing our business this Friday in commemoration of Juneteenth. But these are proclamations; our goal is to pair these with action within our spheres of influence in order to make for a more inclusive and just creative community.
